"Seh Sup'm"
Now Seh Sup'm is a spoken word competition launched by Root Cause in association with Niche Ideaz.
It comes as a sequel to their highly acclaimed Poets Rush Di Mike competition series in 2003.
Seh Sup'm is a celebration and indeed a resurrection of Jamaican dub and other forms of poetry, the legendary names such as Louise Bennett, Michael Smith, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Oku Onoura and Mutabaruka readily come to mind when one thinks of the spoken word in Jamaica but there is whole a lot more “all a wi a poet”.
Over the last couple years the spoken word has taken a back seat, becoming an almost anachronistic relic of an era long gone, subsumed by the growth of the now ubiquitous Dancehall.
The members of Root Cause aim to reinvigorate the legacy of the spoken word into the mainstream yet without the dilution, or commoditization that is seemingly synonymous to success.
The flagship program will be the spoken word competition which offers five thousand dollars to the weekly winners who will then be automatically entered in the Grand finals which promises a reward of fifty thousand dollars. Anyone is eligible to enter so ....Seh Sup'm! |
